We are excited and humbled today to launch the Foculus 50 Healthcare Innovators list to highlight a pivotal moment in life sciences. Behind the Foculus 50 is the growing conviction that true medical innovation begins and ends with the experience of the patient. This is the moment we seek to capture.
The new era in patient-centric innovation marks a departure from traditional models focusing primarily on providers or systems with the patient experience an important yet less urgent consideration. Today, more patient-centric innovation is honoring the individual journeys, needs, and voices of those whose lives are forever shaped by new discoveries, devices, and therapies. We are humbled by their commitment to innovation which makes today’s healthcare evolution – and this list – possible (1, 2 3).
What Is Patient-Centric Innovation?
Patient-centric innovation is more than listening. It means embedding the perspectives and priorities of patients throughout every stage of development. Their perspective needs to feed the entire lifecycle, from discovery through design and delivery to measurement of outcomes and product improvement. Where traditional healthcare innovation often relies on clinical or technical breakthroughs, or efficiency gains, the patient-centric model measures success by impact on real lives. It uses the metrics that matter most to patients, such as improvements in quality of life and satisfaction scores. This approach ensures that solutions are not just effective, but also meaningful and accessible for those they aim to serve (4, 5).
Foculus 50: A Snapshot of the Moment
The Foculus 50 Healthcare Innovators are small and midsize companies selected as a snapshot of this moment because they exemplify the best of patient-centric progress and entrepreneurial effort, across five segments:
Drug makers pioneering therapies with direct patient input and broad access initiatives.
Tech and service providers building tools that connect, empower, and educate healthcare consumers.
Medical device companies transforming comfort, usability, and real-world patient outcomes.
Non-profits reimagining equity, access, and community partnerships.
Other innovators who challenge traditional boundaries to put patient needs first.
Each company was evaluated on five patient-focused criteria: broad patient impact, deep collaboration, remarkable adaptability, meaningful patient involvement in R&D, and commitment to access for all.
What Does Patient-Centric Innovation Look Like?
Consider everyday advances such as non-invasive glucose sensors that replace painful finger pricks, wearable dialysis machines that restore mobility, and care coordination platforms that simplify complex journeys through the health system.
As endurance athletes dealing with Type 1 diabetes, my friends Mike Hebe and Ryan DeWald know the value of high touch glucose monitoring and wearable pumps. Patient-centric innovators such Tandem Diabetes Care build trust, personalize care, and ensure products don’t just reach clinical goals, but make a palpable difference in daily life. More importantly, they invite patients to serve as co-creators—not simply users—of new solutions (6, 7).
The Campaign: Elevating Patient Stories
Over the next 12 weeks, Foculus Marketing will shine a spotlight on each of these organizations. Through daily LinkedIn highlights, weekly articles, case histories, patient avatars, videos, and NotebookLM projects, we will amplify the stories of patients transformed by innovation. Each editorial feature will showcase real patient experiences—how improved access, inclusion in research, and co-designed advances allow more people to live healthier, fuller lives.
